The treatment of jeans is often a controversial topic, with many advocating for infrequent or even no washing of the pants at all.
Those in this camp, which includes former Levi’s CEO Chip Bergh, argue that the denim pants should be spot treated as needed instead.
While doing so does preserve the life of the denim and help the fabric last longer, it also leads to the jeans losing their original starchy, rigid feel.
For some, this is an attractive quality, and there’s an easy way for them to get it back on even the oldest and most worn-in blue jeans.
This can be achieved simply by washing a pair of blue jeans as one would any other article of clothing, according to CNN .
For some, the like-new stiffness the pants get as a result of being washed is a more preferable fit and feel for the fabric.
“I prefer how [a wash] resets the fabric, allowing it to mold back to its original shape, especially with a more fitted pair,” said Lindsey Davidson-Paley, founder of vintage denim brand Lenny, per CNN.
A , cold rinse and fast spin settings is recommended for being most compatible with and kind to denim material.
Vintage denim should also be washed inside out and on a delicate cycle according to Davidson-Paley.
However, one caveat to washing jeans is that they shouldn’t be thrown in the dryer after, since this can both alter the fit and degrade the material over time.
Instead, blue jeans should be air dried with both legs fully flattened out in order to avoid the formation of wrinkles that will persist for some time.
As for how often you should wash your jeans, some experts say it should be done as often as every three wears.
“When you wear jeans for longer (or any type of clothing), sweat, bacteria, and dead skin cells start to build up in your clothes, and they begin to smell,” explained Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap.
“Washing your jeans every three wears will keep them fresh and will stop your jeans from losing their shape,” he continued.
