Human rights attorney, Maxwell Opara, has shared potential solutions to eliminate the sit-at-home orders in the South-East region.
In an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Friday, Opara stated that the only way to resolve this issue is for the Court of Appeal to overturn the Federal High Court's ruling that sentenced pro-Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment.
According to DAILY POST, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the conviction on Thursday after Kanu was found guilty on all seven counts of terrorism brought against him.
Opara remarked, “The most effective way to address this matter is for the Appeal Court to nullify this highly concerning judgment and permit Nnamdi Kanu to continue his advocacy.”
“The government should have approached him to understand the reasons behind his agitation, aiming to resolve the underlying issues.”
“Consider the ruling from yesterday where Nnamdi Kanu's activism is being likened to Boko Haram. Here is someone who has made it clear what he is fighting for.”
“Instead of convicting him and imposing a life sentence, why not engage with him and ask, ‘What is the issue with your agitation?’ Then, by addressing it, the agitation could naturally subside.”
