TEMPLEGATE takes on Friday’s racing certain of firing in a few winners to build the bank for a big Saturday.

SHOUT (4.40 Ascot, nap)

Simon and Ed Crisford’s useful handicapper has caught the eye a few times this season and can make some noise in Friday’s £45,000 feature. After a promising return at Newbury, he ran a huge race here in May. Despite blowing the start and a steady early gallop he finished powerfully for a never-nearer third. Things have not gone to plan since, but he’s a relatively fresh horse for this time of the year and it’s a huge plus Oisin Murphy rides. The selection will relish a fast pace and he should get that today. As long as Shout starts on terms, Murphy should be able to get plenty of cover from stall four.

ATA RANGI (4.55 Haydock, nb)

Ed Walker’s charge has had a win and a second from just three runs this season and should get his favoured soft ground here. He is up 3lb for a narrow defeat over a mile last time at York so dropping back to seven furlongs, with his stamina assured, looks a wise move.

HICKORY (4.05 Ascot, treble)

Form figures of 4713 – which included beating subsequent Group 1 winner Qirat – from his last four runs at the Royal track show the seven-year-old’s liking for the challenge it presents. Trainer Jamie Osborne’s daughter Saffie went close in the saddle last time out at Windsor and, while a rating of 90 is a career-high, it shouldn’t stop him being able to challenge again.

FORTY YEARS ON (5.15 Ascot, Lucky 15)

George Scott’s unexposed horse looks on a dangerous mark for his handicap debut.
