The Yobe State Agency for the Control of AIDS, YOSACA, reported that the state's prevalence rate is at 0.4 percent, making it one of the lowest in the nation.
The Agency's Executive Director, Dr. Jibrin Adamu Damazai, shared this information while addressing journalists in Damaturu today, as part of the events commemorating this year's World AIDS Day.
He noted that despite the low prevalence of the disease in the state, YOSACA remains committed to its mission of minimizing HIV/AIDS cases to the lowest possible level.
“Currently, the state is home to 9,854 individuals living with HIV/AIDS who are receiving medication and have access to comprehensive treatment,” he stated.
Dr. Damazai further mentioned that to enhance coverage and testing, YOSACA has integrated 10 general hospitals and established 84 community centers, thereby supplementing the seven existing comprehensive health centers in Damaturu, Potiskum, Fika, Jakusko, Gashu’a, Nguru, and Geidam to provide additional HIV/AIDS services.
“In 2025, we have secured 120 million test kits in response to funding shortfalls caused by the withdrawal of support from numerous donor agencies. These test kits have been distributed throughout the state to identify newly infected individuals,” Dr. Damazai explained.
With the U.S. funding cut policy currently in effect, the Executive Director praised Nigeria's proactive approach to producing HIV/AIDS medications locally, thereby reducing reliance on foreign donor agencies.
He also expressed gratitude to donor partners such as WHO, UNFPA, NACA, Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative, and Society for Family Health for their continued support, encouraging them to maintain their efforts to achieve epidemic control by 2030 in the state.
