The Nigeria Association for the Blind (NAB), Niger State Chapter, has urged the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to assist in establishing a state commission aimed at addressing the needs and challenges of individuals with disabilities in the state.
The state chairman of the Association, Mallam Hamza Salihu, made this appeal during a visit with his delegation to meet the council chairman of NUJ, Comrade Abu Nmodu, in Minna.
He emphasized the difficulties faced by visually impaired individuals and the necessity for special government attention to tackle their physical and psychological challenges.
He encouraged the media to enhance advocacy and raise awareness about the issues encountered by individuals with disabilities, expressing hope that a robust partnership with the NUJ would help amplify their voices to reach policymakers and foster a society where disability is not synonymous with inability in the state.
“Our visit is part of the activities commemorating International White Cane Day, which is celebrated annually on October 15. The white cane represents freedom, confidence, and self-reliance for visually impaired individuals. We believe that with adequate support and advocacy, we can cultivate a society where disability is not seen as inability,” he stated.
In response, the NUJ, Niger State Council, led by Comrade Abu Nmodu, assured that journalists in the state would utilize their media platforms to amplify the voices of the disabled community and bring the attention of the government and stakeholders to their needs.
He praised Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for his administration's focus on welfare and development programs while urging similar efforts to be extended to individuals with disabilities, especially the visually impaired.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that would improve the living conditions of individuals with disabilities.
