Less than a week after the tragic killing of five residents in the Udeku community of Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State, suspected militia members have launched another deadly assault, resulting in the deaths of two security operatives assigned to Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).

The victims were part of a joint security patrol team and included an officer from the Nigerian Air Force and a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), both deployed to restore peace in the unstable region.

Local sources reported that the operatives were riding a motorcycle back from Adikpo town when they were ambushed by armed assailants, who opened fire at close range, killing two of them instantly.

“They had gone to Adikpo and were on their way back when the gunmen ambushed them and opened fire,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.

A community leader from Jato Aka, Mr. Lawrence Akerigba, corroborated the incident, stating that the attack occurred on Saturday, January 10, 2026, around 4:26 pm in the Turan area of Kwande LGA.

He explained that the officers were originally stationed at Anwase and had traveled to Aga Market to refill a gas cylinder before they were attacked in Udeku, the same location where five individuals were murdered just days earlier.

Akerigba further alleged that the attackers operated in large numbers, setting up roadblocks, burning houses, and destroying farmland and economic crops without facing any resistance.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation, he noted that residents of Jato Aka, which comprises five council wards, are now living in constant fear.

“Our people are exposed to danger. Jato Aka has been overrun. Many residents are packing their belongings, and many do not even know where to go,” he stated.

At the time this report was compiled, Operation Whirl Stroke had not released an official statement, although a military source confirmed that the attack had taken place.

The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Michael Ejelikwu, also confirmed the incident, stating that three OPWS operatives were attacked around 3:00 pm, resulting in the deaths of two personnel.

According to him, the attack occurred in Udeku, Maav-Ya, Mbakyor Council Ward of Kwande LGA.

He identified the deceased NSCDC officer as CCA Tijani Idris (S/No. 76691) from the Kaduna State Command, who was serving with the OPWS Joint Task Force.

Describing the killings as “unfortunate and a hazard of the profession,” Ejelikwu emphasized that the NSCDC remains steadfast and committed to combating insecurity in all its forms across Nigeria.
