Women at the grassroot level have been charged to strengthen continuous voter education and participation in election as a step towards strengthening democracy from the ground up.

This charge was given by Brenda Anugwom, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund at the beginning of a three-day training of trainers on continuous voter education in Osogbo on Wednesday.

The initiative, implemented under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase II programme brought together community influencers, including market women, traders and wives of traditional rulers, to build their capacity as voter education advocates.

Represented by Vaneza Gregory, the Program Lead, Anugwom hinted that the training the trainers programme is aimed at strengthening continuous voter education among grassroots women.

She said, “This is not just another training—it is a step towards strengthening our democracy from the ground up.”

She emphasised that democratic participation depends on citizens being informed, confident and empowered to engage in electoral processes.

She noted that continuous voter education plays a vital role in ensuring that citizens understand their rights and responsibilities beyond election day.

“Gaps such as misinformation, low trust and social barriers still hinder participation, particularly among women and young people.

“You are the bridge between information and action. You are the trusted voices people listen to,” Anugwom told participants.

Participants were urged to actively engage during the sessions by asking questions and sharing their experiences.

“The strength of this room lies in the diversity of your voices and the communities you represent. The programme aims to increase women’s awareness of civic and voting rights.

“It is expected to promote informed participation in elections and strengthen inclusive democratic processes and it underscores the role of grassroots mobilisation in building a more participatory political system. It also focuses on encouraging inclusive participation and promoting peaceful and credible elections.

“The training is designed to equip attendees with the tools to educate communities on electoral processes and counter misinformation. Together, we are not just educating voters—we are shaping the future,

“Under the training model, participants are expected to serve as peer educators within their communities. Each trainee is tasked with cascading the knowledge to at least 100 women, thereby expanding the reach of voter education,” she added.

The training DAILY POST gathered is part of broader efforts to deepen democratic governance and civic engagement across Nigeria.
