Why Did the Grand Sumo Tournament 2025 Take Place in London?
This tournament took place for only the second time outside of Japan, with The Royal Albert Hall in London as the chosen venue.
London and The Royal Albert Hall also hosted the 1991 edition.
Hakkaku Rijicho, the chair of the Japan Sumo Association, explained that he wanted to “share with the people of London the charm of Sumo – an ancient traditional Japanese culture.”
Sumo is also set to visit Paris in 2026, as it has experienced a significant increase in popularity among international fans in recent years.
What Are the Sumo Rules?
A sumo match is decided when a rikishi is either forced out of the dohyo or touches the ground with anything other than the soles of their feet. Matches can end in a split second or last over two minutes.
There are two primary fighting styles in sumo. Pusher-thrusters typically force their opponents out of the ring, while belt-fighters prefer to grapple and utilize judo-like throws.
However, there are 82 winning techniques, ranging from daring throws to clever sidesteps. The variety of techniques and strategies keeps fans engaged, leading to surprises and upsets in any match.
Unlike most combat sports, sumo does not have weight classes, so it is common to see rikishi with significant size differences. Sumo rankings dictate matchups rather than physical attributes.
