A Nigerian researcher based in the United Kingdom, Dr. Obinna Ogbonnia, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing teacher welfare and enhancing learning facilities in the country's primary schools and universities.
Dr. Ogbonnia, a lecturer at Swansea University, made this appeal over the weekend during a training event titled ‘Ebonyi Teachers First,’ which took place in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
The researcher pointed out that investing in teachers is the most effective way to achieve standardization within Nigeria’s educational system.
He expressed concern that teachers have not been receiving the necessary empowerment and adequate training for professional development.
“Teachers require basic needs to enhance their careers and teaching abilities. These needs include food, clothing, and shelter,” he stated.
“How many teachers across various states can claim to own a house or land?” he questioned.
Ogbonnia highlighted the necessity of recognizing teachers as the key drivers and intellectual core of society.
As a gesture of appreciation, he presented N1 million as a gift to Mrs. Alice Awaza, the oldest teacher present at the event.
Mrs. Awaza, who currently teaches at Ohofia Community Primary School in Ukawu, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi, has dedicated 32 years to her teaching career, having started in 1992.
Nine other teachers from various primary and secondary schools were each awarded HP laptops to aid their teaching efforts.
Additionally, Prof. Daniel Nwibo, Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), stated that teachers deserve better working conditions, not only in the state but across Nigeria as a whole.
Nwibo referred to teachers as the “builders” of society.
Prof. Godwin Onu, a lecturer in the Political Science Department at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra, addressed the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), emphasizing the need to tackle ICT challenges in the educational process nationwide.
Onu noted that ICT can simplify teaching and learning and provide greater access to global knowledge within the educational system.
“Students can receive updates on learning more easily. Therefore, the government must enhance teachers' capabilities through ICT to enable them to keep pace with global trends in teaching and learning,” he remarked.
One participant, a teacher named Awaza, expressed gratitude to the organizers and advocated for more advanced training opportunities for teachers in rural communities.
