Governor Ahmadu Fintiri visited communities affected by the communal clash that occurred the Sunday before last in the Lamurde Local Government Area and vowed to seek justice for the families of those reportedly killed by security forces assigned to protect them.
The governor, accompanied by other senior government officials, arrived in Lamurde shortly after returning to the country on Monday evening. He announced plans to create a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the shooting on December 7, allegedly by soldiers, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of seven women who were protesting.
Further fatalities have been reported due to the communal violence, which erupted when youths from the Bachama community of Lamurde clashed with their Tsobo counterparts over a disputed piece of land.
During his visits to Lamurde town and five other affected communities in the LGA, Governor Fintiri assured residents that the investigation conducted by the proposed panel would be transparent, fair, and comprehensive, with the goal of uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the victims.
He stated that the Adamawa State Peace Commission has already been engaging with youths, elders, and community leaders from the affected areas to help restore peace.
The governor also promised victims government assistance, including support for education and livelihoods, noting that agencies such as the State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency are currently providing aid to displaced individuals.
On behalf of the affected communities, the District Head of Lamurde, Pwahomakai Joseph, urged the government to take decisive measures to establish lasting peace between the Bachama and Tsobo communities.
