His father has been sentenced to 16 years in after his newborn son was killed by the pet in his squalid family home in rural Markle, Indiana.
Dad Austin Kinsey said he had been playing in the same room as the newborn and had only left him alone briefly, 21Alive reported .
Cops said he had gone into another room to talk to his mother and his son’s mother.
Then the baby’s grandfather, Timothy Kinsey, heard the baby making noises and burst into the room where he had been left, cops said.
He then found the dog dragging the baby around the room and urged relatives to call an ambulance.
rushed to the scene to find a “strong odour of animal, trash, and dirt everywhere” in the squalid home.
They attempted CPR until paramedics arrived.
But the infant couldn’t be saved.
An autopsy later showed baby Jason had been bitten 180 times by the beast.
It found cuts and bruises all over the seven-day-old baby as well as other major injuries including rib fractures, brain haemorrhages and lung tears.
The dog had allegedly bitten people before and was euthanised.
Family had described Chomp as gentle with the baby, but said he could be jealous and aggressive around other animals.
After one incident with the dog, grandmother Rita Wickey had reportedly told someone to carry a gun in order to shoot Chomp if he became violent.
Court documents described the house as covered in trash, littered with dirty dishes and clothes.
They said the home was infested with bugs, some of which were found in the baby’s car seat.
Huntington County Department later ruled the home not fit for people to live in and ordered them to leave.
Other were taken away from the home and Chomp was put down.
Baby Jason’s dad had been charged with two counts of neglect and one count of harboring a non-immunized dog that caused an injury.
The newborn’s dad was initially charged with two counts of neglect and one count of harboring a non-immunized dog that caused an injury.
The highest-level neglect charge was dropped in a plea deal in exchange for a 16-year sentence, which was issued on Monday.
Jason’s mum Violet Weaver is set for a change of plea hearing later this month.
Cases remain active for other family members, including for grandparents Timothy Kinsey, Rita Wickey and Michael Wickey.
