The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has clarified why the Federal Government is unable to intervene in the escalating costs of airfare tickets.

In an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Wednesday, Keyamo stated that the government has limited authority to tackle the increase in ticket prices due to the deregulation of the aviation sector.

“The government has no authority to set prices for private enterprises, including the aviation industry,” he explained.

“The government cannot take any action regarding the rise in airfare ticket prices because the aviation industry has been deregulated,” he added.

According to DAILY POST, the Senate recently summoned Keyamo and key stakeholders in the industry for an urgent discussion following public outcry over the sudden and significant increase in domestic airfares.

In addition, the President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Nigeria (AOPAN), Dr. Alex Nwuba, mentioned that the increase in airfares is driven by demand and serves as a compensation for lower fares during off-peak seasons.
