The National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Sani Danmasani, has asserted that Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, rather than Rabiu Kwankwaso, is the rightful leader of the party.
Danmasani clarified that, per the NNPP constitution, the current governor automatically takes on the leadership role within the party.
He stated that Kwankwaso, who ran as the NNPP’s presidential candidate in 2023, is no longer officially associated with the party due to the termination of the Memorandum of Association between the NNPP and his Kwankwasiya Movement.
“It is well known that several prominent members of the Kwankwasiya Movement, including Kwankwaso, were subsequently expelled from the NNPP for actions against the party,” Danmasani remarked.
This clarification comes in light of reports suggesting that Kwankwaso has been involved in discussions about political alliances using the NNPP name.
Danmasani dismissed these discussions as invalid, asserting, “Negotiations for 2027 alliances involving Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiya Movement are only acceptable if they are not conducted under the NNPP platform.”
“Only Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the founder and life member of the Board of Trustees, along with the National Executive Committee led by Dr. Agbo Gilbert, are authorized to negotiate on behalf of the party. Any other arrangements are null and void.”
He further emphasized that Kwankwaso and his supporters are welcome to join another party or establish a new one, stating, “They have been expelled and remain expelled. They should either align with another party or create their own.”
Danmasani also urged Kwankwaso to refrain from using the NNPP name to criticize the ruling party, asserting that President Bola Tinubu is not responsible for the nation's ongoing insecurity and economic difficulties.
“With the assistance of allies like the United States and Israel, Nigeria can once again achieve greatness,” he added.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration recognizes the issues the country faces as it begins its term,” he continued.
Additionally, he called on the media to refer to Kwankwaso correctly as a former senator, former governor of Kano, and the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, but “not its leader.”
Danmasani expressed optimism that the ongoing judicial review will prompt the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to update its records accordingly.
