Terrifying footage of the horrific accident was caught by her friend at the Maliuyan Waterfall scenic spot in the city of Huaying on Sunday.

The 16-year-old, identified only by her surname Liu, was seen holding a flag, eagerly waiting for her flight across the lookout.

Smiling just seconds before her fatal plunge, Liu was strapped into the harness as staff prepared to send her out over the gorge.

In the background of the video, her friends could be heard excitedly chattering as she moved towards the edge of the platform.

According to local media, Liu could then be heard shouting several times that the rope was “not tight enough” before she was launched from the secure area.

In just seconds, tragedy struck, as Liu plunged over the drop and slipped down a few inches as the rope came loose.

One of the attendants on the platform reached towards her, but she was already too far gone, plummeting into the valley.

Local media outlets reported the safety rope snapped as soon as she left the platform, sending her falling onto the rocks below.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Liu sadly died on the way to hospital.

The cliff swing was reportedly being operated by an outdoor adventure company known as Chongqing Adventure Camp.

The company had promoted the attraction on its WeChat public account in March.

Officials have since closed the scenic area.

An has since been launched into the deadly incident.

Local authorities have classified the incident as a production safety responsibility accident following their preliminary inquiries.

The park has also announced it would remain shut between May 4 and May 10.

A maintenance check for the equipment is also being undertaken.

One of the staff members for the operator said the company was in contact with Liu’s family and had been cooperating with authorities.

The shocking accident has sparked a conversation on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Users have slammed operators for allegedly ignoring Liu’s warnings.

One user even said the company had “disregarded human life”.

“A small oversight has taken away the future of this young girl,” they wrote.
