Russell faced a battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the opening ten laps of the race.
But the Brit took advantage of the Italian team’s decision to stay out on the track during the virtual safety car period.
This allowed Russell and Antonelli to charge home to dominate the podium.
The race started with even more drama as McLaren’s Oscar Piastri crashed during the formation lap.
The driver lost control over the kerb at his home race as then unexpectedly spun into the wall.
Lando Norris’ started his World Championship defence with a 5th place finish.
Leclerc did come in at 3rd to take the final podium spot and was closely followed by Lewis Hamilton.
A bullish Max Verstappen had battled to 6th place despite starting down the grid in 20th.
