Professor Faruk Kuta has emphasized that significant research is essential for realizing the full potential of universities and enhancing their revenue in Nigeria.

During the 6th Researcher’s and Inventor’s Award ceremony at the main campus of FUT Gidan-Kwano, Prof Kuta pointed out that while all universities offer education, it is the innovation and concrete outcomes from research that distinguish one university from another.

“All universities in Nigeria can provide education; everyone can do this. They operate on three main pillars: teaching, research, and community service,”

“However, what truly defines a university is its research and the creativity that benefits the community through its products,” Kuta stated.

He contended that researchers are transforming research into a catalyst for change, generating both impact and revenue for FUT Minna without overly relying on government funding.

“That’s why I encourage you today to approach TETFUND; they will confirm that FUT Minna is a lively university in terms of research. We are decreasing our dependence on government funding by converting research into tangible products,”

“Moreover, despite facing funding challenges, FUT Minna’s strong research initiatives have secured it a 7th place ranking in Nigeria and recognition from international organizations. This is why we continuously motivate our researchers to break new ground,” the Vice-Chancellor asserted.

Providing context for the event, the Director of the Directorate for Research Innovations and Development (DRID), Prof Chiemela Chinma, noted that the university was ranked first in the 2024 National Research Fund grants cycle and also secured the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) commercial agriculture project worth N1 billion, along with patents and international grants achieved by its researchers. He acknowledged the Vice-Chancellor’s dedication to celebrating the researchers who bring pride to the university.

Regarding the awards, Professor Akin Osunde from the Department of Soil Science and Land Management, speaking on behalf of the awardees, emphasized the importance of involving more senior professors in research efforts to secure additional grants for the institution.

He then praised the Vice-Chancellor for establishing the awards to inspire researchers and inventors to continue innovating.

Additionally, Prof Abubakar Saidu, Dean of the Postgraduate School, expressed gratitude in a vote of thanks, commending the university management and researchers for their outstanding achievements, thus enhancing the institution's prominence in the country.
