THE WAIT is finally over — for the first time in 25 years Coventry are back in the Premier League.

They secured promotion tonight after drawing 1-1 against Blackburn at Ewood Park.

When Coventry played their last game in the Premier League back in May 2001 against Bradford, Geri Halliwell’s cover of “It’s Raining Men” was No1 in the UK charts, Tony Blair was Prime Minister and there was outrage that lager had just hit £2 a pint!

It has been a long road back since with the club nosediving to and being forced to ground-share as they lost their home.

But under ex-boss Mark Robins they climbed the divisions before heartbreakingly losing a penalty shootout in the play-off final against Luton three years ago.

Yet arrived in November 2024. After losing to Sunderland in the play-off semi-finals last May, this time they have stormed to promotion.

Here I take a look at how the Sky Blues finally managed to end a quarter of a century of misery.

FRANK LAMPARD

When he arrived at the CBS Arena the team were hovering above the drop zone. Yet he did not just bring his big name but a huge football brain.

Lampard has transformed the Sky Blues into a relentless winning machine.

His magic has unlocked stars like , who exploded into a proper No9.

He has also turned Brandon Thomas-Asante into an unstoppable force after refining his box positioning.

And then you have the class act in the middle that is Jack Rudoni.

Lampard admits he sees bits of himself in the 24-year-old Coventry midfielder, who has recently added goals to his box-to-box displays.

SPENDING WISELY

The recruitment team deserves the freedom of the city for some of the bargains they attracted while bigger clubs were spending big bucks on duds.

(£3.4million) from Heerenveen and Victor Torp (£2m) from Sarpsborg were a steal,

And they have also been signing characters.

Look at Ephron Mason-Clark, a £4.25m bargain from Peterborough, who has outshone players worth triple that.

Or Thomas-Asante, snatched from for just £2.25m, and now a Premier League striker.

It has been a masterclass in smart spending, proving you do not need a bottomless pit of cash if you have got great scouts.

FEARLESS FOOTBALL

Lampard did not come to Coventry to park the bus — he instead unleashed a Ferrari.

The Sky Blues mastered a heavy metal press, suffocating rivals.

Matt Grimes and on-loan star Frank Onyeka have acted as the engine room.

Their flexibility was the real killer. Whether it was Wright’s lightning pace on the counter or Rudoni’s patient passing, Lampard had every answer.

They have moved the ball with a zip that would not look out of place in the Prem.

DEALING WITH PRESSURE

There was a stage where Coventry looked like choking.

Despite holding a 10-point lead over Middlesbrough in December, Lampard’s men found themselves two points BEHIND their rivals in February after only picking up two wins in eight.

But they re-overtook Boro by beating them 3-1 in a huge game at the CBS and have not looked back since.

GOALS RUSH

Coventry have been banging them in for fun — but that is not just because of how clinical the strikers have been.

Wright and Thomas-Asante have been on fire while Ellis Sims and Mason-Clark have been among the goals too

But then you have Rudoni pitching in from midfield with Sakamoto, Torp and Josh Eccles.

Even defensive-minded players like Grimes, Liam Kitching and Bobby Thomas have chipped in. All over the park they have an attacking threat.

BUYING BACK THEIR STADIUM

The long-running saga of their stadium has been well documented and there is no doubt that has hindered their progress for years.

Having to play at Northampton and Birmingham during times of rental wrangles was a huge low.

Buying back the CBS Arena in August was the ultimate game-changer.

After decades as homeless nomads, the Sky Blues finally own their destiny again.

Every penny from the turnstiles and the bars now stays in the club’s coffers.

That financial muscle has allowed Doug King to back Lampard’s revolution.

Stability has turned the stadium into a terrifying cauldron of noise. With the rent-row era dead and buried, the players have a true home to defend. It is their foundation for a Premier League future.

CAN THEY STAY THERE?

That is the £100m question… quite literally as that is what Coventry are guaranteed to pocket each season they stay there.

It is hard for newly-promoted clubs to compete in their first season up as they are not on a level playing field with teams who have been getting the Premier League riches for years.

As the team is today, no. I believe they would struggle to finish above three clubs. And Lampard will know that.

But if they can add quality to the defence and midfield, I see no reason why they cannot have a puncher’s chance.

It’ll be interesting to see if strikers Wright and Thomas-Asante can step up to the Premier League challenge. They are going to need to.
