Four former governors of Cross River State have praised the current Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, characterizing him as a leader who is genuinely uniting the state.

Chief Clement Ebri, Mr. Donald Duke, Senator Liyel Imoke, and Professor Ben Ayade expressed their appreciation on Wednesday night during the opening ceremony of this year’s month-long Carnival Calabar, which took place at Millennium Park, Calabar. A significant highlight of the event was Governor Otu’s award presentation to the former governors in recognition of their contributions to the state.

Ebri, whom Otu referred to as the “father of modern Cross River,” stated that the gesture was uplifting and symbolic.

Donald Duke reflected on the 20-year history of Carnival Calabar, emphasizing that the festival has remained a powerful unifying force. “The beauty lies in its ability to bring all our people together, diverse as we are, into one unique event where we celebrate ourselves,” he remarked.

Senator Liyel Imoke described the gathering as “heartwarming and nostalgic,” commending Otu for his dedication to continuity. “It is rare for a governor to look back, recognize what is commendable, and build upon it. That spirit keeps institutions alive,” he noted.

Former Governor Ben Ayade also commended Otu for uniting leaders across political lines. “Today is about recognizing that Sweet Prince Bassey Otu has demonstrated the wisdom to bring us all together, beyond party affiliations,” he stated.

Governor Otu, in response, celebrated the legacies of his predecessors by highlighting Ebri’s achievements in agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure; Duke’s transformation of the state into Nigeria’s tourism capital with innovations such as the revitalization of Obudu Ranch, the establishment of CRUTECH, and the inception of Carnival Calabar; Imoke’s administrative reforms in education, rural development, and social welfare; and Ayade’s focus on industrialization and political courage.

“As we illuminate this city, we commemorate their visions and pledge to build upon them,” Otu declared. “My team and I will continue to advance Cross River through human capital development, industrialization, rural transformation, and tourism.”

He encouraged citizens to embrace the festive season with hope and optimism: “May our faith shine as a beacon of renewal and prosperity.”
