The Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo has officially announced the passing of the Owa of Igbajoland, Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III.
In a statement signed by Prince David Adekunle Famodun on behalf of the royal family and obtained by DAILY POST on Sunday, it was reported that Oba Famodun passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, following a brief illness.
The statement read, “On behalf of the Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo, I write with profound sorrow and gratitude to Almighty God to inform you of the passing of our esteemed traditional ruler and the 30th Owa of Igbajoland, Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III. He departed this life on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a brief illness.”
The troubled monarch was installed as the 30th Owa of Igbajoland and received the staff of office on November 24, 2022, by the former Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, during the final days of his administration.
His ascension later became contentious after a white paper was issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke, resulting in his dethronement as Owa Igbajo.
Governor Adeleke subsequently appointed Oba Ademola Makinde as the new Owa Igbajo.
The statement noted, “The Osun State High Court reinstated the monarch on January 30, 2025. The court's ruling affirmed his legitimacy and restored stability to the traditional institution.”
The statement further emphasized that, “throughout his reign, Oba Famodun was widely recognized for advocating unity and development throughout Igbajoland. He worked diligently to bring the people together, fostering peace, understanding, and progress.”
It also mentioned that the late ruler’s “vision has made a lasting impact on the community and will continue to inspire future generations.”
Oba Famodun, who previously served as the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, was 67 years old at the time of his passing. He was happily married and is survived by his children.
