The troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade have eliminated four suspected militia members and seized a cache of weapons during an operation in Usmanu Village, located in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.
This operation was initiated in response to renewed communal conflicts that are reportedly tied to an ongoing land dispute between the Shomo and Wurkun communities.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Umar Muhammad, the troops were dispatched after receiving credible intelligence indicating a resurgence of hostilities in the region.
“Upon their arrival, the soldiers came under attack from armed assailants operating from the Fadama axis. A brief exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in the deaths of four militia members,” the statement indicated.
A subsequent sweep of the area confirmed the recovery of three dane guns, a makeshift AK-47 rifle, 25 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and two motorcycles.
In a significant development, the army also confirmed the arrest of a serving police officer who was allegedly found collaborating with the armed group. The officer is currently under investigation to assess his involvement in the clashes.
The Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their rapid and professional response.
He reiterated the Brigade’s dedication to restoring peace in Taraba State and maintaining pressure on criminal elements.
General Uwa encouraged the residents of Karim-Lamido and surrounding communities to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and provide credible information to assist ongoing operations. He added that security efforts under Operation Peace Shield, Operation Lafiya Nakowa, and Operation Zafin Wuta would persist until full stability is achieved.
