The Sokoto State House of Assembly has called for a rapid assessment and urgent intervention following flooding in Gada, Kebbe, and Dange/Shuni local government areas.

The resolution was passed during plenary on Wednesday after a joint motion of urgent public importance moved by lawmakers Kabiru Dauda (APC–Gada East), Sama’ila Hamisu (APC–Kebbe), and Sirajo Shuni (APC–Dange/Shuni).

The assembly urged the state government, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to determine the extent of the damage and provide relief materials to affected communities.

Lawmakers said the disaster had destroyed farmlands, displaced residents, and caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. In Gada LGA, crops including millet, maize, guinea corn, beans, onions, and peppers were submerged.

In Kebbe, several villages including Bashi, Fakku, Margai, and Kuchi were badly affected, while in Dange/Shuni, many residents of Dambuwa and Shuni communities were rendered homeless.

The House also called for long-term preventive measures such as erosion control and sensitisation campaigns to reduce the impact of future disasters.

In a separate resolution, the assembly directed the contractor handling the 38-kilometre Gada–Illela road to appear before its committee over alleged abandonment of the project, which residents said had become impassable during the rainy season.
