Europa League: Man Utd suffer big injury blow ahead of Athletic Bilbao second leg

Published on May 04, 2025 at 08:22 PM

Manchester United have suffered a fresh injury concern ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club next Thursday.

Matthijs de Ligt was forced off during their 4-3 defeat to Brentford on Sunday afternoon.

De Ligt was making his first start in any competition since 2nd April.

However, the Dutch defender lasted only 35 minutes following a collision with Bryan Mbeumo.

After being assessed on the pitch, De Ligt was replaced by Harry Maguire.

United boss Ruben Amorim told MUTV after the game: “I hope it is [only] a small issue because I am concerned, not only about this game [against Athletic Club], but about the squad for the next year.”;

In a separate interview with the BBC, Amorim said: “I hope it’s nothing serious. We took a risk with [Harry] Maguire [having to come on].”;
