EPL: Man Utd to lose £80m after defeat to Tottenham in Europa League final

Published on May 23, 2025 at 05:26 AM

Manchester United are set to incur a loss of £80million following their miserable season in the Premier League and absence from European competition next season.

The Red Devils were in line for a £70million payment if they had qualified for the Champions League by winning the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Amorim’s men lost 1-0 in Bilbao to their league rivals, thanks for a first-half goal from Brennan Johnson.

The result also means they will not play in Europe at all next term.

This season, United earned £30million in UEFA TV money from the Europa League. They won’t have that money next season.

Matchday receipts are also expected to drop by about £20million, with probably five fewer home fixtures at Old Trafford.

United will also have a £10million penalty clause under their new deal with kit manufacturer Adidas invoked for 2025-26 after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

The club’s 16th place in the Premier League means that they would earn about £22.4million in prize and TV money less than last season, when they finished eighth.
