EPL: I didn’t want to join Man Utd – Lukaku opens up

Published on July 02, 2025 at 05:59 PM

Belgium striker, Romelu Lukaku, has admitted he was not really keen on a move to Manchester United.

United agreed to a reported £75 million fee with Everton for Lukaku in 2017.

He has now claimed that he would have preferred to join Chelsea but was influenced by a phone call from Jose Mourinho, who was the manager at Old Trafford at the time.

Lukaku told Het Nieuwsblad: “I had already told everyone: I’m going to Chelsea.

“But suddenly Mourinho called me to say that Manchester United had made an offer.

“I came back from vacation and suddenly there was an agreement with Everton.

“I said to Mino [Raiola, after the move]: ‘I don’t want this’, and then I decided now I’m doing everything myself.”;

Lukaku went on to score 42 goals in 96 appearances across two seasons for United.
