EMMERDALE bosses went to extreme lengths to pull off Andrew Scarborough’s return to the soap – six years after his character died on screen.

The actor – who played Graham Foster in the soap – made a shock return during the crossover event Corriedale.

And in tonight’s episode at long last – one almost a year in the making.

However the big return was shrouded in secrecy with bosses going to extreme lengths to keep it a secret.

A source told The Sun: “This was the biggest soap surprise in years and one that no-one saw coming so nothing was deemed too extreme to keep it a return.

“All the usual things happened with fake names in the scripts and closed sets but for this one poor Andrew wasn’t even allowed to go into the canteen in case he was spotted.

“It was a stressful few weeks trying to keep everything quiet but now he’s back properly and allowed to enjoy coming in through the front door and the staff canteen.”

Viewers watching Corriedale earlier this month saw a hooded Graham was seen transporting a woman in the back of a van.

She was bound and gagged and fled when Graham got caught up in the car crash pile-up.

Corrie fans know the woman is Shona Platt’s sister Jodie but it hasn’t been revealed how she is connected to Graham.

But in today’s episode of the soap, Graham was seen in the village for the first time.

The episode is the first of a run of special episodes looking at the whodunnit of who murdered gangster Ray Walters.

And at the end of today’s episode Graham can be seen watching evil Ray taunting Laurel Thomas’ son Arthur.

The details of how Graham survived his apparent murder have been kept a closely-guarded secret, but soap boss Laura Shaw has confirmed he is back full-time.

“A familiar face is returning to the village full-time!” she said.

“None other than Graham Foster will make a sensational comeback.

“His return will have massive repercussions for both Kim, with whom he shares a complex love and hate relationship, and Rhona, who was about to run away with him.

“Graham will explain exactly what happened six years ago when he was ‘killed’, but the question will be whether Joe can ever forgive his father-figure for allowing him to believe he was dead.”
