Edo APC suspends member over alleged offensive social media post

Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has approved the suspension of one of its members, Stella Ogbetta, for a period of six months over a social media publication deemed injurious to the party’s image.

The party’s State Working Committee, SWC, ratified the decision during its meeting on Friday, following an earlier suspension by the leadership of the Oredo Local Government Area chapter of the party.

In a communiqué signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, the SWC stated that the action was part of efforts to instil discipline and uphold decorum within the ranks of the party.

The communiqué noted that the SWC expressed concern over recent instances of misconduct involving party members in Oredo and Ovia South-West Local Government Areas, highlighting in particular a social media post credited to Mrs Ogbetta, which it said brought the party into disrepute.

“The SWC, having received the formal communication from the LGA, ratified the suspension and further resolved that at the expiration of the six-month period, Ogbetta must tender a formal letter of apology to the SWC. Failure to do so will result in her expulsion from the party,”; it noted.

The committee further resolved that upon completion of the suspension, Ogbetta would be required to submit a formal letter of apology to the SWC. Failure to comply with this directive, the communiqué warned, would result in her expulsion from the party.

At the time of filing this report, the specific content of the social media post that prompted Ogbetta’s suspension had not been independently verified.
