In a notice on its Online Services Shutdown page, EA said it was closing down Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare on PS3 servers in April.

It is expected Xbox 360 servers will close shortly after that date.

Users who access the game via PC, PS4, and Xbox One servers are also likely to lose the service in the future, according to gamers.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare has been described as a “multiplayer third-person shooter meets tower defense game”.

It was developed by Vancouver-based PopCap and publisher EA.

News of the impending closure has upset many gamers.

In a post on Reddit discussing the announcement , one wrote: “Dude I maxed out this game so much on PS3. I just hope there will be private servers but damn this is gonna suck.”

Another said: “I’ll be honest, with the end of the PS3 version, I honestly don’t think the other versions will last as long now.”

A third gamer posted: “Dang, that stinks. Amazing it’s lasted this long.”

A fourth said: “Nooooo. R.i.p. One legend game.”

PS3 in the UK and around the world have until April 28 to enjoy Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare online.
