As he travelled along Van Limburg Stirumstraat, he spotted a group of teenagers throwing snowballs at passing cars.
Witnesses say the man stopped his vehicle and got out, apparently intending to put a stop to the reckless behaviour.
What should have been a brief exchange quickly spiralled out of control.
Police believe a fight broke out, with local reports suggesting the man was punched.
He collapsed at the scene, leaving bystanders horrified as the gravity of the situation became clear.
Emergency services rushed to the metro station and were assisted by a member of the public as they desperately attempted to resuscitate him.
Despite their efforts, the man’s condition deteriorated rapidly.
However, he died in an ambulance while being transported to hospital.
Two teenage boys were later arrested in connection with the man’s death after initially fleeing the scene on foot.
They are believed to be aged between 16 and 17 and are now being questioned in custody as investigators work to establish exactly what happened.
Dutch police confirmed the violence followed an argument, saying: “A fight may have broken out after snowballs were thrown, and blows were exchanged.
“The investigation is ongoing to determine exactly what they did or said.”
Officers are exploring several possible scenarios and have carried out extensive neighbourhood inquiries, witness interviews and a review of surveillance footage.
Ultimately, it was camera footage that led police to identify and detain the suspects.
According to local media, investigators believe the teenagers were throwing snowballs at cars when the victim made some sort of remark.
Police stressed: “Who exactly did or said what is part of the investigation.”
The man’s definitive cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Earlier in the inquiry, an 18-year-old man from Vlaardingen and a 19-year-old from Rotterdam were arrested.
It later emerged they had no involvement in the incident and they were subsequently released.
The victim’s family are now grieving an unimaginable loss, saying he “paid the ultimate price of his courage”.
His death has sent shockwaves through the local community.
In a poignant tribute, residents laid flowers and lit candles near the metro station where he collapsed.
Authorities continue to appeal for information and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
The tragedy unfolded against the backdrop of harsh winter conditions gripping much of western Europe.
