Heightened tension was evident in Ugba, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, over the weekend as the conferment of a chieftaincy title on governorship aspirant, Sebastian Hon, SAN, was interrupted by the Executive Chairman of the Council, Mr. Clement Kav.
Hon had been invited by the Ugondu Traditional Council to receive an honorific chieftaincy title in recognition of his efforts in promoting social justice in Nigeria, during the Ugba Day Celebration on Friday.
Chaos erupted when Hon and his entourage arrived at the residence of Mue Ter Ichongo, Chief Terngu Iorhuna, in Ugba, the headquarters of Logo LGA.
The council chairman, Hon. Kav, showed up at the scene accompanied by a former Nigerian ambassador to Russia and governorship candidate in the 2011 general elections, Prof. Steve Ugba. They arrived at the palace visibly angry, with Hon. Kav stating:
“I will never allow anyone to disrespect Alia,” referring to Benue State Governor, Fr. Hyacinth Alia. “We do not want these guests in Logo.”
He then departed swiftly in waiting vehicles, along with other cars displaying Governor Alia’s image.
Hon quietly exited the traditional ruler’s residence and made his way to Hon. Iorkohol Ijir’s house, where he received a warm welcome.
Hon. Kav later returned to the area with a contingent of police, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), and demanded that Chief Hon leave Ugba.
Addressing the large crowd before exiting the town, Hon stated that he had not come to incite trouble in Ugba or anywhere else in the state.
He expressed gratitude to the traditional council and the people of Logo for deeming him worthy of the honor:
“I believe the Logo community has embraced me. I have not come to disrupt the community, so I pray that God blesses you for granting me a title that has caused some individuals sleepless nights. I also pray for those who are persecuting me.
“I have not yet declared my candidacy, and some people are already anxious. So when I eventually decide to run, what will they do?
“I do not want anyone's blood to be shed because of me, so I am leaving, and I ask that the title be brought to me.”
