Robin Antill from 1st Choice Leisure Buildings spoke to Vice about his signature organizational method.
“At the beginning of October, turn every hanger in your wardrobe backwards. Each time you wear an item, return it with the hanger facing the correct way,” design expert Robin Antill advised Vice .
“By December, you will clearly see the results.”
“Any hangers still facing backwards indicate the clothes that have not been worn all season.”
Instead of simply donating the clothes, Antill suggests another method to help homeowners ensure they are truly ready to part with their items.
The design expert recommends placing unworn items in a box with a date label.
“Then, when spring arrives, you will know exactly which items you have genuinely missed and which ones you haven’t thought about at all,” the expert explained.
“You can then donate them without guilt, giving you a more streamlined capsule wardrobe.”
The expert also recommended a ‘suitcase swap’ to assist with seasonal wardrobe changes.
“Fold clothes into a suitcase, zip it up, and store it under the bed or on top of your wardrobe,” he suggested.
“When spring comes, opening that suitcase will feel like discovering a store filled with your own items, packed with different fabrics after months of wearing knitwear.”
“This trick instantly frees up space, transforms a chore into a biannual ritual, and completely avoids the dreaded ‘wardrobe squeeze.’”
FAQs
What is the hanger method for organizing a closet?
The hanger method involves flipping every hanger in your wardrobe backwards at the start of the season. After wearing an item, return it with the hanger facing the correct way. This allows you to see which clothes have been worn by the end of the season.
How can I determine which clothes to donate?
You can place unworn items in a box labeled with a date. When the next season arrives, check which items you haven't missed, allowing you to donate those guilt-free.
What is a suitcase swap?
A suitcase swap involves folding seasonal clothes into a suitcase, zipping it up, and storing it away. When the new season arrives, opening the suitcase will reveal your items, making it feel like a new shopping experience.
