The Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has emphasized that Nigeria cannot afford to become a one-party state.

Prof. Sylvester Monye, the state chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Delta State, expressed this sentiment in a heartfelt New Year message to the residents of the state, both at home and abroad. He underscored the necessity of a strong and effective opposition for the health of Nigeria’s democracy.

He expressed confidence that adherence to democratic principles will protect the integrity and independence of all political parties, including the PDP.

In his greetings to party leaders and loyal members throughout the state, who he acknowledged for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices to keep the party alive, Monye remarked that the start of a new year is a fitting time for reflection and a renewed dedication to service, guided by the principles of peace, fairness, and collective responsibility.

He stated that it is vital for all political actors to strictly adhere to due process, internal democracy, and the highest standards of political behavior, cautioning that decisions made today will have lasting impacts on Nigeria’s democratic framework.

With certain issues related to the PDP currently in the courts, he emphasized the Supreme Court’s consistent stance that the internal affairs of a political party should primarily be managed by the party itself, free from undue judicial interference.

Monye noted that despite differing political affiliations, the people of Delta are united by a common responsibility to uphold the stability, unity, and orderly progress of the state. He stated that their mission is to ensure that the PDP remains unified, responsive, and prepared to fulfill its constitutional role in Delta State, a traditional stronghold for the PDP.

He called upon all leaders and members of the PDP in the state to act with discipline, restraint, and respect for party regulations and democratic principles, highlighting that the credibility of the party’s internal processes will ultimately shape its reputation with the electorate.

“To the wonderful people of Delta State, we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to safeguarding your interests and aspirations. In the coming days, the Caretaker Committee will continue wide-ranging consultations and engage with stakeholders across the state, ensuring that political discussions remain centered on good governance, development, and the rule of law.

“The year 2026 holds particular significance, as it precedes the 2027 general elections and will witness the conduct of party primaries.

“In the cases of Anyanwu v. PDP and the recent SDP v. INEC ruling, the court confirmed that judicial bodies should exercise restraint and respect the independence of political parties.

“In line with the legal principle of “stare decisis,” we trust that the judiciary will continue to uphold these established precedents, thereby ensuring party independence, legal certainty, and the stability of democratic processes while respecting ongoing legal proceedings.

“We, members of the esteemed PDP in Delta State, remain committed to constitutionalism, constructive dialogue, and principled leadership. We are equally dedicated to reorganizing and strengthening the party, especially in light of recent defections, and to preparing for the orderly conduct of congresses that will lead to the election of substantive executive officers,” Monye concluded.
