The 42-seater vehicle was travelling from Ramnagar town to Udhampur city when it hit an auto-rickshaw at a sharp curve.

The bus suddenly veered off the road and fell down approximately 100ft onto the road below.

Emergency services quickly rushed to the scene, launching a rescue operation.

Civil administrator Prem Singh said 19 passengers died on the spot while two more have died in hospital.

The remaining injured are now being treated in various centres nearby, officials said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his extreme sorrow about the accident.

He also announced the families of those affected would receive monetary relief for their loss.

An investigation is now ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

India is known for having some of the highest road death rates worldwide, with hundreds of thousands killed and injured annually.

Most incidents are a result of reckless driving, poorly maintained road and aging vehicles.
