Tragic Story of Áine Rose Hurst

When Áine Rose Hurst woke up with a severe headache after a night out with friends, she attributed it to a ‘typical teenage’ hangover.

When the pain persisted, she asked her mother for help, who provided her with paracetamol, an eye mask, and advised her to rest. Tragically, Áine passed away just two days later in her mother Kerry's arms.

Kerry is now speaking out for the first time to raise awareness about the alarming truth behind her daughter’s ‘hangover’ and to warn other young women of the associated dangers.

Mum-of-two, Kerry, 52, shared with Sun Health: “Áine was the most beautiful, funny, and caring girl.

“We will never recover from losing her, but if we can save a life in her memory, that would provide us with some small comfort.”

Just before Áine's 16th birthday, Kerry took her to the doctor due to heavy periods.

She was prescribed Femodette, a combined contraceptive pill, and for three years, there were no complications.

Kerry states: “Like many other millions of women, the Pill seemed like a sensible and safe choice.”

However, in December 2024—on the same day Áine passed her driving test—a routine check revealed that her blood pressure was dangerously high.

“I would usually accompany her for the annual check, but Áine was excited to drive herself since she had just passed her test,” Kerry recalls.

“When she returned home, she informed us that the nurse had taken three readings, and her blood pressure was alarmingly high. She was taken off the Pill immediately.

“We had a blood pressure monitor at home, and Áine tracked and recorded it daily for weeks.

“It was concerning, but the readings gradually decreased because she was no longer on the Pill.”

In early January 2025, Áine visited her GP to discuss alternative contraception. After confirming her blood pressure was within acceptable limits, he prescribed Femodette once again.

Kerry admits: “I was a bit apprehensive about that; it felt unusual.

“But I trusted the GP; I never imagined Áine was in any danger at all.

“I now find myself wishing I had insisted on going back to the GP.

“At that time, we were unaware that Áine's blood pressure was only just within the guidelines.”
