Aliko Dangote, the wealthiest individual in Africa and President of Dangote Refinery, has revealed plans to expand its current capacity of 650,000 barrels per day to become the largest refinery in the world, reaching 1.4 million barrels per day.
This announcement was made during a briefing in Lagos on Sunday.
He emphasized that if the expansion is realized, his refinery will surpass the Jamnagar Refinery in India, which currently has a capacity of 1,240,000 barrels per day, making it the largest refinery globally.
He also mentioned that the facility will increase its polypropylene production from 900,000 metric tonnes to 2.4 million metric tonnes annually.
However, Dangote did not provide specific details regarding the timeline or the strategies his team will employ to accomplish this ambitious goal.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day,” he stated.
“Once completed, this will establish it as the largest refinery in the world, exceeding the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” he added.
Recently, the company initiated its direct petrol supply scheme.
Nevertheless, petroleum product marketers have expressed concerns about the lack of supply and delays in receiving petrol products after making payments to Dangote Refinery.
Bloomberg previously reported that Dangote has encountered operational challenges that have affected petrol supply within the country.
According to DAILY POST, petrol retail prices have surged in recent weeks due to the supply issues at Dangote Refinery, with filling stations selling the product for between ₦950 and ₦965 per litre in Abuja as of Sunday.
