Petrescu stepped down as coach of his home-country club CFR Cluj four months ago.

Since then, he has maintained a low profile amidst health concerns.

Earlier this week, Romanian media shared images and footage of the 57-year-old walking in a park, wearing dark glasses and appearing frail.

The president of the country’s football league, Gino Iorgulescu, disclosed the heartbreaking news that the former star is undergoing chemotherapy.

Iorgulescu stated to local media: “I’m at a loss for words – it’s a sensitive situation. May God grant Dan a swift recovery and a cure.

“I don’t know the exact diagnosis, but I understand that it is quite serious.

“He is undergoing chemotherapy. I’m unsure of his current status.

“He played for me, and he also coached under me at FC National. We were friends as well.

“Hearing such news is unsettling – it makes me uncomfortable.

“I have always had, and still maintain, a good relationship with him. Since learning about his serious condition, I haven’t been in touch with him.”

Petrescu’s three daughters have reportedly returned from abroad to be by his side during this difficult time.

He made 207 appearances for Chelsea, netting 24 goals, and also won two FA Cups and a League Cup with the team before departing in 2000.

The Bucharest native also had stints with Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford, and Southampton.

He concluded his fourth term as Cluj's coach following a 7-2 defeat in the Conference League against Swedish side Hacken in August.

Petrescu previously led the team to five league titles and has managed various clubs across Romania, Poland, Russia, China, and the Middle East.
