Operation Whirlwind, a division of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) dedicated to combating the smuggling of petroleum products out of the country, has seized containers of these products valued at over N181 million.

The contraband, which was reportedly intended for neighboring countries from exit points in certain regions of Adamawa State, was confiscated over the past two months.

The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, ACG Kolapo Oladeji, made this announcement in Yola on Thursday while addressing reporters about his unit's activities in Zone D, emphasizing that the Nigeria Customs Service is determined to put an end to smuggling.

“We will continue our efforts until we reach a point in our national life where smuggling, particularly of petrol out of the country, is recognized as a serious offense,” he stated.

In detailing the seized products, Kolapo Oladeji reported 55 instances of petrol seizures with a total duty paid value of N181,603,515. This includes 284,006 liters of PMS stored in 2,642 Jerry cans of 25 liters each; 11,256 liters of PMS stored at a filling station; and 485 drums, each with a capacity of 220 liters.

He also mentioned that two large wooden boats, used for transporting the contraband, were included among the items confiscated from the smugglers.

He expressed disappointment that audacious smugglers continue to attack Customs officers performing their lawful duties, but assured that such actions would not dissuade the officials from their mission.
