A civil society organisation, the Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development, NEFGAD, has called on the Federal Government to investigate alleged administrative lapses at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB.

The NSIB is a Federal Government multimodal transport agency mandated to promote safety in air, land and marine transportation through the investigation of transport-related accidents and incidents in Nigeria.

NEFGAD made the call in a statement issued by its Acting Head of Office, Barrister Blessing Unekwu Ojo, and made available to journalists in Abuja.

The organisation stated that on November 25, 2025, at exactly 3 pm, its representatives visited the NSIB headquarters to submit an official document.

“Shockingly, a receptionist informed our team that no staff member was available to receive any letter from the public and instructed us to return the following day.

“In compliance, our team revisited the Bureau on November 26, 2025 at about 2 pm. Regrettably, we were again informed that there was still no staff available to receive official correspondence in line with the directive of the Director General, Mr Alex Badeh Jr, that no official of the NSIB should receive any official letter from the public,” the statement said.

Condemning the development, NEFGAD said the repeated inability of a federal institution to perform the most basic administrative function reflects a disturbing culture of negligence and internal disorganisation.

“For an agency with a critical mandate in aviation safety, such behaviour of the Director-General and the NSIB is not only unacceptable but undermines public confidence in its professionalism and operational integrity,” the statement noted.

NEFGAD described the conduct of officials of the agency as a clear case of official irresponsibility, raising fundamental questions about leadership conduct, oversight, internal structure and staff accountability within the NSIB.

It noted that an agency unable to receive a simple letter cannot inspire confidence in its capacity to handle matters as sensitive and critical as safety investigations.

The organisation called on President Bola Tinubu to direct relevant oversight bodies to urgently investigate the alleged administrative lapse and ensure that appropriate corrective measures are enforced.

“NEFGAD remains committed to advocating for transparency, accountability, and functional governance across all public institutions. Nigerians deserve efficiency, not excuses from agencies funded by taxpayers’ money,” the statement added.
