Court restricts tailor’s working hours over noise pollution

A magistrate court sitting in Kano has found a local tailor, Mubarak Yusuf, guilty of environmental pollution due to excessive noise from his sewing machine and generator, which had become a nuisance to the residents in his area.

The case was brought by the Kano State Ministry of Environment following complaints from residents who said the constant noise, particularly at night, was disruptive to their peace and sleep.

In a statement from the ministry, the officials stated that while the tailor had denied the allegations, the court had found evidence contrary to his defense.

The court undertook an on-the-spot investigation and it was confirmed the noise was indeed excessive.

After considering the evidence available, the court ruled that Yusuf could only operate between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily.
