COPS are attempting to extradite Christian Brueckner to the UK to stand trial for the abduction and murder of Madeleine McCann.

A senior officer with the Metropolitan Police is pushing to charge the 48-year-old German ahead of the 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance next year.

Scotland Yard believes it can gather enough evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service to authorise charges and for the case to be heard at the Old Bailey.

Brueckner was named as the prime suspect in the toddler’s disappearance by German cops while serving a sentence for the rape of a pensioner.

Charges though were never brought and he was released last year.

Under the German constitution though, it prohibits the extradition of its citizens to a non-EU country, which is likely to see Berlin reject any request from the UK, possibly triggering a diplomatic and legal row.

Should Germany refuse any request to hand over the rapist and paedophile, British cops are committed to ensuring he still faces charges in Germany or Portugal, where the youngster went missing, The Telegraph reports.
