The lawmaker representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Ajang Alfred Iliya, has come in for heavy criticism after he presented electric scooters to some of his constituents as empowerment items.

According to his media team, Hon Ajang presented the 10 scooters to the recipients as part of his commitment to improving the lives of his people and promoting their economic well-being.

In a statement on Saturday justifying the empowerment programme, the lawmaker’s media team said the gesture was a covenant of a promise of hope and prosperity which he went into with the people.

It added that the Rep. is delighted to continue delivering on his promise and is confident that these electric bikes will empower the constituents to achieve their goals and improve their livelihoods.

However, the gesture has received serious backlash as many of the constituents wonder what the scooters will do to improve the lives of the recipients or what benefits they would achieve in the long run.

Some commenters on social media have also lambasted the lawmaker over what they termed misplaced priority, while others believe he could have given the money he used in purchasing the electric scooters in meaningful empowerment schemes.

Some angry constituents have vowed not to vote for him again in the 2027 election as they see his representation as wasted, believing that his performance does not deserve a second term.
