Femi Emmanuel, the Presiding Pastor of Livingspring Chapel International, has remarked that many politicians seek out prominent General Overseers not for spiritual guidance, but to tap into their large congregations.
Addressing reporters on Saturday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Emmanuel highlighted that politicians often value the electoral influence of religious leaders more than their spiritual advice.
“When politicians visit well-known General Overseers, their primary motive is political, aiming to persuade their members to vote for them,” he stated.
“I consistently remind my congregation: they are interested in your votes. And when they say, ‘Dad, pray for me,’ Dad will pray, but he cannot change anything. Politicians only heed those who assist them in winning their primaries.”
The cleric urged Nigerians to develop a better understanding of the political landscape, stressing that significant decisions are frequently made at the grassroots level by individuals who may not be equipped to manage such responsibilities.
“I want Nigerians to pay attention. Responsible citizens often avoid ward meetings, believing we are too sophisticated. However, if you participate in ward meetings, you will be disheartened.
“People quarrel over ₦1,000 sent to them, yet these individuals are the ones who select delegates. Delegates determine candidates, and candidates choose leaders. Without delegates, you cannot have candidates,” he explained.
Emmanuel also called upon the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu to take a more concentrated approach, with a stronger focus on national security.
“You are brave and resolute, but you find yourself in a very challenging situation,” he remarked.
“He did not initiate this terrorism, but he must ensure that peace is restored throughout Nigeria.”
The cleric argued that reinstating a regional system of governance in Nigeria would resolve most of the nation's issues.
“Our problems would be 90 percent resolved if we revert to regional government. If we don't, the issues will continue and may even escalate,” he cautioned.
