CIVIL servants who work from home have been handed more than £600,000 to pay for their heating bills.

Taxpayer-subsidised payments for staff have more than doubled, from £95,000 in 2022 to £211,000 in 2026.

In total, workers in the government’s third-largest department have been given handouts of £610,000 for heating.

And, the total spent on all civil servants is believed to be much higher – with all contractual home workers entitled to the payments.

According to , seven per cent of those working for them can claim the cash – a total of 5,259 people.

Mike Wood, the shadow Cabinet Office minister told The Sunday Telegraph: “It is astonishing that civil servants working from home are having their hating covered by hard-pressed taxpayers.”

He added: “Families have enough on their plate without having to shell out for handouts to public servants.

“The Government should focus on getting down for everyone.”

We revealed last week how energy bills are set to soar to the highest level in three years, in the latest blow to struggling households.

The price cap, which is the maximum providers can charge per unit of energy, is expected to increase by 4% in October.

That’s according to analysts at well-respected energy research firm Cornwall Insight.

It means a typical household will be facing a yearly bill of £1,729, up from £1,663 – an increase of £66.
