The recovery timeline after this incident is unclear but Boesen has shed more light on the events that unfolded in Sunday’s game, which was called off with – who did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup – leading 2-1.

He said: “He wanted to go [off the pitch] himself and also say hello to his family. And the ambulance was on the corner. So he was allowed to do that. He was completely monitored.

“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.

“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly and we were quickly in contact with him.

“He will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.

“We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them he was OK.”
