CELTA VIGO’s opening-day LaLiga clash with Osasuna has been postponed due to FUNGUS ravaging the pitch.

The Galician side were scheduled to host the match at Balaidos Stadium this Sunday.

Celta ground staff had been working their fingers to the bone trying to rectify the outbreak that had ruined the playing surface.

And although they had made good progress, hot and dry conditions caused the pitch to deteriorate again.

Celta, Osasuna and the Spanish Federation (RFEF) all agreed to postpone the match following a .

It has now been rescheduled as a Thursday night game on August 27.

Celta said: “LaLiga agreed this morning, in coordination with the clubs and the RFEF, to postpone or find that it had to face Celta and CA Osasuna this Sunday in Abanca Balaídos due to an illness that affected the stadium’s grass, which at this time is not suitable for soccer practice.

“Last week, a technical visit was carried out by LaLiga to validate the work carried out to eradicate the disease that affected the grass and certify that the field met the quality and safety parameters set for sports practice.

“The climatic conditions of the last two days produced an adverse effect on the evolution that was close to the game and led to the decision to suspend or terminate.

“The tickets issued for this match against Osasuna remain fully valid for the new schedule, so it will not be necessary to carry out any additional processing.

The Spanish side’s squad features ex-Liverpool flop , former defender , and out-of-favour goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who joined on loan last week.

Celta finished fifth in LaLiga last season and will play in the this term.
