Grimsby have been punished for fielding an ineligible player against Manchester United in the Carabao cup second round.

The League Two side eliminated United 12-11 via penalty kicks after the game ended 2-2 in 80 minutes.

As reward for this famous Cup win, the Mariners will take on Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.

But in a statement from the EFL on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Grimsby Town will pay a fine of “£20,000 – of which £10,000 will be suspended until the end of Season 2025/26 – for having breached the Rules of the competition.”

There no suggestion that a registration mishap will see Grimsby’s historic victory over United overturned.

According to the statement, Grimsby “self-reported the breach upon discovery the day after the fixture had been completed.”
