Tourists managed to pull him from the water on Saturday and attempted CPR, but he could not be revived.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Chanan Mekchai of Patong Police Station stated: “The incident occurred around 11:30 AM, and we were notified an hour later.
“He arrived at the beach with his wife around 10 AM. While swimming, he was caught in strong waves and vanished beneath the surface.
“Beachgoers rushed to assist and successfully pulled him from the water. They performed CPR while awaiting emergency services, but he could not be revived.”
Eyewitness Chariya Thaweerat Howells, 31, reported that two other tourists were also pulled from the sea but survived after being rescued.
She mentioned that the British man was not immediately visible in the turbulent surf.
“I was at the beach with my friends around 11:30 AM. The waves were quite strong; we were even discussing how rough the sea appeared,” Howells explained.
Beachgoers quickly moved towards the water, and a local man launched a kayak to help, eventually bringing the pair back to safety.
However, Chariya noted that a third tourist had gone under unnoticed while attention was focused on the first two.
When he was finally brought to shore, she stated he appeared unresponsive and seemed to have already drowned.
The British father had arrived in Thailand with his wife on November 19 for a family vacation and was staying at a resort in Patong.
He had previously enjoyed swimming in the sea several times during the holiday without any issues.
Witnesses reported that it took around 25 minutes for an ambulance to reach the beach.
Tourists also utilized a stretcher to carry him off the sand.
Chariya mentioned that there were no lifeguards or red warning flags at the beach despite the hazardous conditions.
She and her friend ended up translating after communication difficulties arose between Thai helpers and foreign tourists during resuscitation efforts.
She described the scene as chaotic, with locals urging rescuers to move the victim to higher ground, while tourists insisted that CPR should not be halted.
