Brentford vs Man Utd preview

From Bilbao to Brentford...

Manchester United must turn their attentions back to the Premier League following their triumphant European adventure on Thursday.

The Red Devils took a giant step towards the Europa League final with a ruthless 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium.

Casemiro opened the scoring before captain Bruno Fernandes struck twice in a dominant first-half display that leaves United firmly in control ahead of next week’s return leg at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the match, United manager Ruben Amorim urged caution despite the healthy lead.

“This is not done. They can do the same thing at Old Trafford,”; he told TNT Sports. “We are confident but we need to be really careful with our players against Brentford.”;

With that in mind, Amorim is expected to rotate his squad heavily for Sunday’s trip to the Gtech Community Stadium, prioritising Champions League qualification over a fairly meaningless top ten finish.

That could open the door for Brentford, who are chasing their own slice of history.

Thomas Frank’s side earned a valuable three points with a 2-1 victory away at Nottingham Forest on Thursday, a result that stretched their unbeaten run to four matches.

Now sitting 11th in the table, the Bees are just two points shy of eighth-placed Fulham and remain in the hunt for a surprise European qualification spot.

Brentford have never finished higher than ninth in the Premier League, but with momentum building and a potentially weakened United side in their sights, they are firm favourites with the bookies to take maximum points this weekend.

Bees sting

Thomas Frank’s side ended a dismal run of eight home league matches without a win by thumping Brighton 4-2, and they quickly followed it up with a clinical 2-0 triumph away at Nottingham Forest.

With back-to-back victories and European qualification within touching distance, the Bees will fancy their chances against a Manchester United side likely to field a much-changed XI ahead of their crucial Europa League semi-final second leg.

The stats hardly favour the visitors either. United are winless in their last five Premier League outings and have managed just three wins in their last 21 top-flight trips to the capital (D5 L13) — all three of those coming against Fulham.

Wissa kind of magic

Yoane Wissa is worth backing to continue his hot streak in front of goal this weekend.

The Brentford forward has been in scintillating form, scoring in each of his last three appearances – against Arsenal, Brighton, and Nottingham Forest – and looks well-placed to take advantage of a much-changed Manchester United defence that has conceded six goals in their last four away games.

Wissa, 28, has notched an impressive 16 Premier League goals in 30 appearances this season, with 11 of those coming at the Gtech Community Stadium. That tally equals Ivan Toney’s club record for most home goals in a top-flight campaign.
