Brave binman Wayne Broadhurst, 49, was later killed while walking his dog – with floral tributes remembering him as a “true hero”.
Datahira Hassan, 41, claimed five locals used baseball bats and hockey sticks to fight off the 22-year-old migrant arrested for his murder.
The mum-of-four, who lives across the road, told The Sun: “It was horrific. The teenage boy knocked on our door screaming ‘help, help’.
“He was in shock and had blood on his hands where he’d been injured.
“It was his dad who had been stabbed so I called an ambulance and my husband called the .
“I looked outside and saw the man in his 20s carrying a huge knife – at least 10 inches – while wearing a leather jacket, black shirt and jeans.
“That was when the dog walker came around the corner.
“He tried to help but he just kept stabbing him so many times. It was awful.
“Around five neighbours came out with baseball bats and hockey sticks to keep the attacker away from hurting anyone else until police arrived.”
Mrs Hassan claimed the injured father and son both live in the house which today remained cordoned off with a blue tarpaulin over its front door.
Forensics officers brought evidence bags out of the semi detached home where a silver Astra had been abandoned across the pavement.
Other neighbours believed the Afghan migrant, who arrived illegally in a lorry in 2020, was living in their £550,000 house as a lodger.
One woman, who lives across the street and didn’t want to be named, told The Sun: “They were all living together in a shared occupancy.
“It all seems to have broken out after the 22-year-old had a row with the landlord.
“I heard a lot of shouting but never thought it would all end like this.”
Police were continuing to quiz the suspect who was tasered and arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday afternoon.
