THIS is the moment a child appears to use a hammer and chisel on a frozen lake as adults watch on safely from shore.

Two women watched from the bank as the child crouched on the ice and tried to bash at the surface below his feet.

A dog was also seen running on the ice at Pen Ponds in Richmond Park, London.

There are several large yellow warning signs placed around the water in the park, telling walkers not to go on the ice.

It comes after a brave passerby was filmed crawling across a frozen lake while who plunged into the icy water after trying to help a dog.

A man shuffled across the frozen surface on his hands and knees after spotting someone had broken through the ice and was struggling in the water on Sunday.

Video posted on shows the man in the water desperately grabbing his rescuer’s arm to be pulled out.

The nail-biting footage was filmed at Connaught Water in Epping Forest, Essex on Sunday, just before 2.30pm.

Fire services scrambled to the scene and said the dog was safely reunited with its owners.

It comes as as a cold snap continues to grip the UK with snow, ice, heavy rain and strong winds this week.

Last night was the coldest of the winter so far, and the Met Office has now extended yellow weather warnings for the south until Friday.

Staffordshire warned parents to keep children off ice today, after reports of a child falling through the iced-over surface of a lake in Stoke-on-Trent.

Also on Sunday, a dog sadly died in Painswick Park, in south , after becoming trapped under the ice of a frozen lake.

The pet was found dead in the water by firefighters.

Essex Fire and Rescue’s Watch Manager, Gary Dyer, said: “We completely understand why people want to help in situations like this, but cold water can overwhelm the body very quickly.

“The safest thing to do is stay out of the water and call us – we have the training and equipment to respond safely.

“As cold continues, we’re also reminding people to take extra care around frozen lakes and waterways and avoid walking on ice, which can look solid but is often thin and unstable.”

with the freezing weather hitting every part of the country and more of the white stuff expected to blanket the UK over the coming days.

The will persist until the storm hits with yellow warnings for ice and snow now issued for tomorrow, covering most of England and Wales.

The fresh warnings will be in place from midnight tonight until 10am tomorrow morning.

Storm Goretti is expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds with yellow weather warnings in effect in preparation for the storm from 6pm on Thursday until midday on Friday.

The Met Office said: “Storm Goretti likely to bring heavy snow leading to disruption and difficult travelling conditions.”

Meanwhile, the UK Security Agency has issued amber cold weather health alerts for all regions of – lasting until Friday January 9.
