LIVID Portsmouth fans launched a bottle at referee Josh Smith during their huge relegation six-pointer against Oxford.

Pompey were one goal up and flying when Smith showed a straight red card to Connor Ogilvie in the 17th minute.

Ogilvie, 30, was dismissed for a scissor-action sliding challenge on Stan Mills but the home fans felt hard done by – and took their fury out on the official.

A plastic bottle landed near the feet of Smith, who ran over to his fourth official to report the incident.

A stadium announcement then rang around Fratton Park telling Pompey supporters that the behaviour was “unacceptable”, which was met with more boos.

An already fiery match in the scrap to beat the drop only became more tense after this.

Pompey started the day just a point above Oxford and Leicester, narrowly outside the bottom three.

Keshi Anderson had sent the home crowd wild after just nine minutes, taking down a bouncing ball in the area before wriggling from a tackle and firing in with his left foot.

But the atmosphere on the south coast quickly changed when Ogilvie saw red.

Oxford players protested immediately with three putting their arms in the air after the poor challenge.

Ogilvie protested his innocence and could not believe it when he was sent for an early bath.

Ref Smith explained his decision and was booed off by the Pompey fans at half-time.
